United Press International (Apr 11, 01:05 PM) A woman carrying twins expected to be born in May would become China's first mother to have children conceived from frozen germ cells.
A Beijing hospital affiliated with Beijing University is moving to build the country's first human germ cell bank, reported Xinhua, China's main government-run news agency.
Six other women, ages 37 to 47, who are also carrying babies conceived from frozen cells, are reported doing well, according to Dr. Li Xiaohong who is affiliated with the hospital.
The germ cell freezing and storage technology is mature enough in China, but it's only for trial use now, she said. Wider clinical use has to wait until relevant laws are made, because, after all, pregnancy and birth are big issues and have to be protected by law.
Married women between the ages of 22 and 35 who are free from infectious and congenital diseases are allowed to apply to store cells for future impregnation, according to Li.
